Every non-sine failure was our stitched startup

Session: 2026-10-03, 03:57 → 08:47 UTC (one sitting, evening of 10-02 into 01:47 at the bench) · Findings: in docs/T88_arb_entry_context.md (findings 16 and 19 are named in the transcript) · Leads directly into 2026-10-03

Where we started

Five days had passed. Multitone worked from an external source. EC→GEN had been tested and read inert. The startup was known to be two APWIN sessions stitched together, and nobody had tested whether that mattered.

Chris opened with: "OK I have some time to do more here. What is next in the project? I think we had some features queued up to implement"

The working belief was: the generator ignores EC writes, and arb is the one mode we need.

The question

What does it take for the AP's own generator to produce a multi-tone signal from Cascade?

What happened

Multitone as its own test, and an assumption. Claude moved multitone into its own sidebar test (88 tests). "I don't really understand this. can you rephrase it?" Claude rewrote its explanation plainly. Chris then set the bar: "For us to call this one functional, the AP unit has to be able to generate the tones like it does with APWIN. There is an assumption there, which is that APWIN is generating tones and not playing back a sample" AP's manual answered it: multitone is a file played as an arbitrary waveform.

Three eliminations. "yes whatever needs to be done to get us a good working multitone test that is like the APWIN one" Replaying 600 commands from just past the init cut in coldstart.pcapng (241 generator EC writes) changed nothing. The EC→GEN probe turned out to be copied from Cascade's own non-working code; a faithful copy of APWIN's writes was still inert. A "skip phase 2" checkbox wouldn't tick: "i see the "skip phase 2" box but can't tick it. I have not yet connected. do i need to connect first?" It was bound to a property SwiftUI did not observe. Fixed. Phase 2 skipped: still inert.

Sloppy. Claude was spot-checking registers one at a time, retracting each theory as the next command contradicted it. It had just called 8A 01 18 analyzer ranging from one capture when Chris's message, sent mid-turn, reached it: "i feel like you are making a lot of kind of sloppy mistakes in our last several sessions. You are doing things and then going back and saying "oh my bad, i should have seen that thing i skipped". Please be more thorough, because i think it is wasting a lot of time." Claude saved feedback_exhaust_before_reporting.md and inventoried every command in T88's arb window against two sine windows. The control killed module 0x48 (same rate in both). A predicted commit triplet failed against dualTone-20. What remained: APWIN's arb entry took 65 commands and Cascade sent

  1. A comment said the skipped block was covered by _changeAmplitude. Claude checked and found 19 of

the 25 writes were sent by nothing. Shipped verbatim with 3 tests.

Memory, and a missed commit. "i'm concerned about the memory file being at limit. I don't want to lose record of what we did." The index was 23.4 KB of 485 KB; two files were unlinked. Checking, Claude also found its earlier commit held only docs, with the Swift changes uncommitted.

Still a sine, and a scope. "it complains with the banner about arb mode being blocked. i am ignoring that for the test" Claude verified the banner was cosmetic. Result: ⛔ SINE at 1000 Hz. The arb blob turned out to be a splice that dropped 10,270 packets of T89, which Claude judged pure readback. A response diff matched 32 of 44 commands. "i am not clear on what the next step is" Claude opened T88_arb_spectrum.csv for the first time: APWIN's arb peaked at 1375.95 Hz, so Hd1k-60.agm was not the 1 kHz THD oracle that memory said it was. It proposed a scope on the generator. "the genmon readout on the scope changed briefly to 4khz" That was a frequency sweep baked into apib_fft_full. A no-FFT probe: "the scope probe stayed at 1khz" Claude declared arb "a dead end by construction" and recommended parking it.

Chris's redirect. "why not just have the cascade app play the file? That wouldn't need any generator, right?" Claude built playback in the app, removing a manual 48 kHz setting that could silently shift every tone. ""The Focusrite is still required. " Why?" The analyzer input is analog only. "i think to call this working, we will need a way to keep it out of the loop." Reading AP.Gen.Wfm in the BASIC reference, Claude found IMD and noise are analog-generator waveforms, and that 8A 01 18 was the FuncMode register, documented in Cascade's own code. Its morning "ranging" reading was wrong.

T90. Claude wrote an APWIN procedure; Chris ran it on the PC. "where did the apwin test store the log?" The unit's IMD read better than spec. Two of Claude's design errors showed in it: DIM had no frequencies set, and crosstalk drove both channels. The pcap showed FF FF F9 = 0x04 for both arb and SMPTE IMD, so that register was a flag, not the selector. Claude briefly concluded EC→GEN "really is inert", then decoded 0x30's high word as the waveform code (7 = arb).

It goes flat. "the 1khz tone plays at the beginning as you said, and then it goes flat" The output changed, so EC→GEN worked. Claude had offered a two-way prediction on a three-way question. Then six silent runs. A picker that ignored its default: "also this is a mistake you have made before in other pickers. please note." (feedback_picker_use_the_house_pattern.md). A settle loop that demanded exact equality on a noisy register, with the house helper _settledRead sitting unused. Arb's D/A routing bit used for an analog mode. A verbatim window that mixed T90's amplitude bytes with Cascade's. Chris's reports were one word by the end: "flat". After the sixth, Claude stopped and recommended the external source.

Stubborn. "i'm going to be stubborn about not using the extra focusrite equipment. APWIN doesn't need it. neitehr should Cascade." Claude checked that T90 began at APWIN's launch and built apib_t90_imd_state.regs.bin, 92,509 packets of one coherent session, to replace both init phases. "should "verbatim t90" also be checked" That question caught two conflicts that would have overwritten the loaded state. First run: EB021C = 24735 against T90's ~24660. The silence was gone.

Three more layers. "the tone on the scope flickers briefly adn goes back to 1kHz" APWIN polls about 3,600 reads after the window; Cascade didn't. "same - 1khz, then a brief flicker accompanied by relay clicks and back to 1khz" The clicks pointed to connect: 8A 01 24/25 is both the amplitude code and the input switch, and connect rewrote it after the blob. Then the reading held at −69.7 dB, run after run. Cutting further into T90, Claude found the SMPTE high tone written once, 2,113 commands after the window, as 2 × 7000. "it does flip from 1khz to 7khz." −96.4 dB, then −100.0 dB with the analyzer setup added. Registers matched APWIN's within 5%; the remaining gap was a 5.53× scale, applied as a one-point calibration for SMPTE only.

Arb, under one session. Claude built a T89 single-session blob. "it went to 6khz from 1. then i clicked it again and the second time it went to 4khz. clicked again and that time it seemed not to move off of 1khz. I clicked again and ti went to 1.36khz" The log read 1368.000 Hz at −20.01 dBV, against 1365 predicted. Claude blamed the apib_fft_full reload and suppressed it. "it appears to have regressed." That was T89 state left ticked under MEASURE IMD, a combination Claude hadn't guarded. Then: "on the first one - scope stays flat" Without the reload the generator was silent. Claude reverted and corrected itself: the 1368 Hz run had been T89 state plus one apib_fft_full reload plus four window replays, and it had reported the state it intended.

The turns

  1. "Please be more thorough" replaced spot-checks with one exhaustive pass and a control.
  2. "why not just have the cascade app play the file?"
  3. "i think to call this working, we will need a way to keep it out of the loop."
  4. "i'm going to be stubborn" overruled Claude's recommendation to park it.
  5. "should "verbatim t90" also be checked"

Where we ended

Native SMPTE IMD worked with no extra hardware, at −100.0 dB, 105 tests. Arb had played once and could not be reproduced. Open: what apib_fft_full does that the generator needs, the IMD percentage scale beyond one point, and CCIF/DFD/DIM still unscaled.
